And heres the interesting thing about the book, is that I believe like when bodies of culture come up to me and talk to me if a Black woman or Indigenous woman or somebody comes up to me and talks to me, the one thing that they all say is, I been thinking this my whole life, and then, when I read it in your book, it made me feel like I wasnt crazy because racialization makes us walk around like were crazy like the things that are vibratorially happening to us, the images that are happening, the meaning, all of that different type, the fact that we walk around with this bracedness because were infected by this idea that the white body is the supreme standard. You need to depend on others and get the support from other people to live and to thrive. OK, 36. Now, I dont know what that is, but I know its something I need to pay attention to. Tippett: So some of the ways were trying to work forward, were actually making ourselves unsafe again? Tippett: No, because also, as you point out, most people think, But thats not me., Tippett: Yes, I want to talk about it, but youre not talking about me. And so when you say little things, the body hears, Yeah, thats right. Tippett: And what about a person of color? Its no wonder and no cause for shame. Clearly, Twitter's over-pivot on 2016 lead to a big mistake. Trauma decontextualized in a family looks like family traits. White people have the luxury of not being so. Most of them, as much as I liked and even admired them, certainly didnt seem to me like leaders. Menakem: Notice the rage. [laughs] Thats real talk. I had expended enough hard work on her to make me love her. Menakem: Thats right. If I asked you to and you have different exercises for Black bodies and white bodies and police bodies, but would you just kind of demonstrate, for people who will be listening, havent read the book, dont know what were talking about, a beginning exercise? Theres always been this kind of resonant knowing that somethings there. Instead of letting money to control your life and your relationship, learn to make it work. Why they were doing it all in the first place. Courage: there is physical courage, which you all possess in abundance, and then there is another kind of courage, moral courage, the courage to stand up for what you believe. And then what happens is, it goes just the term, white supremacy, is a very intellectual term. And so my grandmother and my mother and the Black women in my life have always been that protector and that nurturer and that person that would get at your butt and say, Yeah, you can do it, and lets keep moving and my wife. Dont look for an Indigenous guru. And to me, what you speak into that, very concretely you say, We tried to teach our brains to think better about race which makes sense; it felt like that was a good idea. Thats what Emerson meant when he said that he who should inspire and lead his race must be defended from travelling with the souls of other men, from living, breathing, reading, and writing in the daily, time-worn yoke of their opinions. Notice that he uses the word lead. Its the Army, after all. Look at what happened to American corporations in recent decades, as all the old dinosaurs like General Motors or TWA or U.S. Steel fell apart. In this It wasnt always easy for him.
